The condition of your lips may not be purely a cosmetic or dental concern. Here are some of the most common lip problems, and the health problems that may be associated with each symptom.
Cracked lips
Aside from dehydration, cracked lips can also be a symptom of diabetes, anemia, and vitamin B deficiency.
Chapped lips
Lips that are persistently cracked and peeling, accompanied by swelling, can be an indication of an allergic reaction. An allergy test can determine what triggered this lip problem.
Pale lips
Lips that are pale can signify problems in the lungs or heart, or may be a sign of anemia.
Burning or painful lips
Aside from allergies, the burning sensation on lips can be a sign of depression. The psychological imbalance can trigger the lips to become unusually sensitive.
Swollen lips
Lips that are swollen may be triggered by food sensitivity or allergies. The swelling may also be a sign of Crohn’s disease.
Cold sores
Caused by the herpes virus, cold sores are more common in people who have a weak immune system.
Blue lips
If accompanied with blue fingernails, blue lips can be a sign of an asthma attack.
