5 Causes of Jaw Problems

Jaw problems such as a termporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort. What causes these jaw problems? Here are the most common causes of jaw problems:

Teeth grinding

Teeth that are constantly ground together can eventually harm the jaw joints, causing pressure and intense discomfort.

Crooked teeth

Teeth that are not properly aligned can cause an improper bite, or an abnormality with the way the teeth come together when biting, or when the mouth is closed.

Abscessed tooth

A tooth abscess is characterised by tooth pain, with the infection spreading all the way to the tooth root.

Jaw injury

An injury to the jaw area, such as that from an accident leading to a jaw fracture, will involve jaw pain.

Jaw joint problems

A problem in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) will cause pain in the jaw area.
