Children are just as susceptible to tooth decay as adults are. Aside from regular tooth brushing, going to the dentist regularly, and using dental floss, here are additional tips to help keep your children as far away from tooth decay as possible.
Avoid eating or eating before immediately before going to sleep
Eating or drinking right before bedtime can lead to tooth decay, especially if tooth brushing is not done afterwards.
Discourage snacking throughout the day
Frequent snacking or drinking exposes the teeth to sugars and food debris for longer periods of time. This can contribute to the development of tooth decay.
Expose children to healthy food items
Teach children how to enjoy healthier food items such as vegetables and fruits, especially the crunchy ones such as apples and pears.
Avoid giving children too many sweets
Sweets like candies and chocolates can contribute to tooth decay development.
Encourage children to drink water when thirsty
A lot of children look for milk, juice or even soda when they are thirsty. Opting for water when they are thirsty will keep them well hydrated without exposing their teeth to high sugar and acidity.
